WHAT IS THE BIBLICAL BASIS FOR GIVING?
In the Bible there are many passages in which God shows us through His servants the importance of Giving (Tithes):
“And blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.” – Genesis 14:20
Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God, and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God’s house. And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.” – Geneis 28:20-22
“Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is the Lord’s; it is holy to the Lord.” – Leviticus 27:30
“Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.” – Proverbs 3:9-10
And the priest, the son of Aaron, shall be with the Levites when the Levites receive the tithes. And the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes to the house of our God, to the chambers of the storehouse.” – Nehemiah 10:38
“Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions. You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.” – Malachi 3:8-10
“I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.” – Luke 18:12
“In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.” – Acts 20:35
For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, 2 Corinthians 8:3
WHAT SHOULD I GIVE?
You should give 100% of your heart to Jesus first. After you made a decision to follow the Lord, the Bible shows us that believers throughout history were encouraged to give a tenth of their all incomes to the support of the ministry and the needs of the poor. Therefore, the tithe (10%) is the guideline for giving.
